It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Spring Symposium of the EADV
in Istanbul.
This time the European society pushes into the geographic limits of the Old
Continent, opening a door to communication with dermatologists from neighboring
countries. The EADV is ready to deepen a dialogue with new colleagues and to
establish with them fruitful relationships of mutual cooperation.
The scientific program looks very interesting and I do feel the need to thank
both the local and the Society’s Committee of the Scientific Program for their
excellent work. The social part will undoubtedly be just as agreeable and will
satisfy the expectations of every participant. Istanbul will also represent a
very important moment for the life of the society, since a definitive
breakthrough will be made in our organization through the settlement of new
statutes which will be subjected to the approval of the extraordinary General
Assembly. The Board will also discuss on new initiatives in specific sectors and
on the good results obtained in the discussion with the national societies.
Therefore, this is a Congress which represents an outstanding occasion for
medical updating, for a deeper meeting with the “new” dermatological community
and for a definition of the development projects of the EADV.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the president of the Congress,
Prof. Mehmet Ali Gürer, and to his colleagues, who see their strong dream of
hosting the EADV in their land come true and their patient work rewarded.
Prof. Alberto Giannetti
President of EADV
Welcome Address by Joseph L. Pace
Dear
Friends,
The Spring Symposium is a recent addition to the more traditional autumn EADV
Congress. At its inception this academic meeting was described as an innovative
bridge of science to the peripheries of Europe and this fifth Symposium does
exactly that, following on the steps of Malta, Budapest, Sofia, and Saariselka
in Lapland. These Symposia have been, against some predictions, highly
successful with attendance increasing from year to year. Coming to Istanbul is
thus very special for EADV since this time our hosts and indeed many registrants
will come from a country that is partly European and partly Asian, fitting in
marvelously with our Symposium concept and the so aptly chosen Symposium theme,
Bridging the Continents.
The award of the 2008 Spring Symposium to Istanbul is a recognition of the
excellence of Turkish academic and clinical dermatology, the ongoing strong
support of our Turkish colleagues for EADV and the Journal of the European
Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, as well as a celebration of the arrival
of Turkey on the Board of Directors of EADV where we were very pleased to
welcome our colleague Mehmet Gurer in October 2006.
The academic programme prepared by the hard working local Scientific Committee
in conjunction with the EADV Scientific Programming Committee is a superb one
laying emphasis on both the science and the art of general problems of Dermato -Venereology
as well as focusing on particular diseases that are more frequent in the region.
Join us in 2008 in this fairytale city of Istanbul also once known as Vasileousa
Polis (Queen of Cities) which extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the
Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in
the world which is situated on two continents. Live the EADV experience - learning and friendship in one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the
world*.
